Just my .02, but you should be able to use the settings under nvidia-settings --help and some power management rules to get the same thing. I use "nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=1" at boot to always set my PowerMizer to 'Performance.' There's options in there for just about everything, so you could probably use it to set up your own scaling rules and everything based on AC/battery states, etc.

Didn't work for me - tried method in article + comment by TJ. Performance Mode stayed at 'Maximum Performance'.

I used what TJ suggested and it worked, the PerfLevelSrc=0X3333, it changes the GPU performance dynamically, although I had to restart X.

a better option may be to have dynamic frequency control by adding Option "RegistryDwords" "PerfLevelSrc=0X3333" to xorg.conf as it allow compiz to function at the lowest core speed and games to operate at higher core speeds without restarting X

I got a reverse problem. I have 3 states:

0 = slow
1 = normal
2 = performance

When i have my laptop dockt (AC) its always in state 1 when i do some actions its going to 2. But i want continue state 2! performance that is. Also on battery i want 2. But this hack dint work. here are the drivers:
NVIDIA Driver Version: 173.14.05
Server Vendor Version: 1.4.0.90 (10400090)
OS: Ubuntu hardy.
Nvidia Chipset (Quadro) laptop Dell D630C
